Claim Your Space, Manage Your Reputation

When you search for businesses on the internet, what often pops up is that business’ “Local Listing”. They look like business cards and often have a small map, address, phone number and website information.
These are created by the search engine companies like Google, Bing, Local, Facebook, Foursquare, LinkedIn, and Yahoo Local. They create them to help their users find useful information about local companies.

What many are not aware of is that you can claim these spaces for free and set them up to your liking. You can often add logos, hours, pictures, videos, expanded map listings, and manage and respond to reviews about your business.

Business owners need to take control of these potential assets. Sometimes they are incorrect, outdated, or worse hijacked by competitors. Anyone can, if they want, “suggest” photos for businesses on Facebook that are not administered. These will stay up until the business owner claims his space and takes control of the listing. This feature alone should convince you to take control at once.

And If you don’t you will be missing an opportunity to manage these spaces as the effective introductions to your company they could be. 82% of people research local businesses with the search engines. Since this process only requires you to spend your time to do it, it’s a good idea to get your ducks in a row, sit down and fill these out.

Here is what you are going to need:
• Your logo in jpg, gif, or png format
• Photos of your people, building, and products
• A brief description of your business
• Email and membership accounts will be necessary for some
of these but they will prompt you to sign in or set one up as

Here’s where you should go:

Verification process:
After you have filled in the questionnaire, they will want to verify that you are who you say you are. This verification process is usually conducted with a phone call shortly after you hit submit on the form. The automated call will be made to the phone number they have as your number within a minute or so. So you need to be ready to pick up the phone. Also if possible turn off any automated greeting so that you can personally answer the phone, especially for Google Places and Yelp. Some of these services often also offer an option to be verified by mail.

Further Down the list:
After you have your basic information set up you will be able to edit content or add information such as specials offers or coupons, receive feedback and respond to customer reviews. Google maps will now allow you to move the map marker for your business if it was inaccurately placed, and add how to find parking.

Some of the new features offered by Google are custom QR Codes that can be used in printed materials. When someone scans the code with a smartphone they will be automatically taken to their Google Places Page.

You can also participate in paid for programs like Ad Words and keep track of your listing with a personalized dashboard that will tell you about visitation rates and more.
